I see that Gov. David Paterson has called for a thorough investigation but has stopped short of saying that race was a factor. Ok. I will accept that pending the investigation.

He was however, quoted as adding that the shooting was not deliberate.

It seems the boys in blue have been at it again. An off-duty police officer saw a man breaking into his car and a struggle ensued. When the man broke free the officer (Omar Edwards) pulled his gun and gave chase. That seems a perfectly legitimate thing to do. After all he was a police officer.

A plain clothes patrol unit in an unmarked car saw the chase and stopped. Which is where it all started to go pear-shaped. Now obviously what should have happened is that these officers should have identified themselves. Did they? Nobody knows yet. Time will tell.

But… if they did identify themselves how likely is it that a fellow police officer would ignore that identification rather than identify himself? In Harlem? He’d identify himself pretty damn quick I should think. Read the rest of this entry »

A 14 year old teenager in Chicago recently turned up at a station house wearing a cop’s uniform and not only got through the station security unchallenged but was allowed to go out on patrol. I’m glad the boys in blue are on the ball up there otherwise a 14 year old turning up at a station house, getting into a secure area and being sent out on patrol would give me grave cause for concern. Johannes Mehserle – the (now former) BART cop who was caught on video by several people on New Year’s Eve shooting an unarmed man in the back whilst another cop was kneeling on him – has finally been arrested. I wonder why it took them so long to arrest him? I mean really… an unarmed man, being knelt on by another cop, shot in the back, caught on video? It shouldn’t have taken two days let alone two weeks to have decided that under those circumstances charges should be brought. They’re sure as hell quick enough when it’s a member of the public.
