Neewer HD MCUV Protective Filter – Quality on a Budget

I like to have a protective lens for every lens that I have rather than swap them around all the time. Now because I have so many cameras and lenses that pass through my hands I often just buy a budget filter for any lens I am not keeping as part of my personal equipment or something that I may hang onto but not use that often.

I acquired an Olympus Digital 11-22mm f/2.8-3.5 which I use with an Olympus Evolt E-300 or E-520. It takes a 72mm filter and as I have not made a decision on whether this will be a keeper I was on the lookout for a reasonably priced protective filter. This Neewer UV filter is what I ended up choosing.

This Is What You Get:

The Neewer HD MCUV (multi-coated UV) filter comes with a plastic carry case along with a microfiber cloth. All are up to the usual standard of finish that I would expect from this company. I own and have used Neewer equipment of various types for years including some of their filters.

Nowadays, most people use a UV filter as protection for their lens of course and that is exactly what I will be doing. Although UV itself in the digital age is not really a problem, keeping a lens safe is. Just because it is being used for protection doesn’t mean that the filter can be in any way substandard.

Build Quality

The filter is listed as being made from optical glass and as having multi-layered and anti-scratch coatings. I didn’t try and scratch the filter deeply to test the anti-scratch coating but I did let it roll around loose in a bag of bits and pieces (some metal and some plastic) to see how it fared. Well, it did okay with no damage that would cause an issue.

As the filter is also listed as being waterproof, I tested that too. I literally ran the filter under the tap for a short time and then shook the pool of water off. I can vouch for the fact that this filter is indeed waterproof. Quite impressively so actually.

A nice touch is that the filter is knurled which makes it much easier to put on and get off. And it is slim! It is a mere 3.4mm thick once screwed on. Thinner than many premium filters I own.

Available in sizes ranging from 49mm to 82mm it should work for most lens sizes.

A Few Final Words on the Neewer HD MCUV Filter

I do buy very high quality filters for my main gear but that becomes prohibitively expensive if you’re a gear freak like me. So, many times I am looking for a compromise between price and quality and this lens fits snugly into that category.

Is it high-end? No, it isn’t. But neither is it in any way sub par and it’s far and away cheaper. I would have no hesitation in using it on a quality lens such as the 11-22mm I bought it for.

In a nutshell? If you are looking for a budget filter that genuinely punches above its weight price-wise then too a look at this one by Neewer. I noticed when I price-checked that some sizes are no longer available so it is probably worthwhile checking both Neewer and Amazon for both sizes and prices.
