Zhiyun Molus G300 LED Light Review: Powerful, Compact, and Versatile

When searching for a high-powered studio light that could be mounted at a significant height, my top priority was finding a model with a dedicated remote control – not just app-based operation. That’s when I discovered the Zhiyun Molus G300, which features a detachable control panel rather than relying solely on smartphone connectivity. Intrigued by this setup, I decided to give it a try.

Build & Design: Compact Yet Heavy-Duty

Despite its impressive output, the main light unit is surprisingly compact, measuring just 5″ x 5″ x 3″ (excluding the handle and stand mount). However, don’t let its size fool you – this light is substantially heavy, weighing 3 lbs 9 oz (1.6 kg) without the reflector. Because of this, I’d strongly recommend pairing it with a sturdy light stand rather than a flimsy one. Personally, I recommend C-stands.

The control panel is similarly robust, measuring 5″ x 6″ x 2.5″ and weighing 2 lbs 5 oz (1.056 kg). It features intuitive controls for adjusting both color temperature (2500K-8500K) and brightness (1%-100%). Like most high-powered LED lights, it includes a cooling fan. While the fan is noticeable, it’s quieter than many competing models I’ve used.

Performance & Features

Once powered on, the Molus G300 delivers exceptional brightness – far exceeding my expectations. The fan noise, though present, isn’t disruptive enough to interfere with video work. Which is what I will be mainly using this light for.

A few standout features include:

  • Bowens-mount reflector (included) for easy modifier compatibility.
  • 13-foot (4m) power cable, providing excellent flexibility in studio setups.
  • Dual control options: Use either the physical panel or Zhiyun’s smartphone app which offers additional presets for tungsten, fluorescent, and other lighting effects.
  • Build quality

Minor Drawbacks

Given the premium price point, I was surprised that the light doesn’t include a carrying case – especially since Zhiyun’s smaller and cheaper 60W models which I also own come with one.

Additionally, while the fans are relatively quiet, they might still be audible in very quiet recording environments.

Zhiyun Molus G300: Final Verdict

If you need a bright, reliable, and versatile studio light, the Zhiyun Molus G300 is an excellent choice. Its powerful output, flexible controls, and sturdy build make it a strong contender for both photo and video work. While the lack of a case and slight fan noise are minor downsides, the overall performance more than justifies the investment.

Highly recommended for professionals and advanced enthusiasts!
