Asparagus War?
For those of you who didn’t know, and I am sure there are quite a few, Cyprus was invaded by the Turks in 1974 and the end result was a split island which now operates under the auspices of a UN peacekeeping force.
Apparently the peacekeepers have upset the locals as they have refused them access to the UN patrolled buffer zone thus preventing the traditional harvesting of wild asparagus. Read the rest of this entry »
Nationalism
Nationalism has a lot to answer for. Don’t get me wrong – there is nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage (even if others don’t see it as something to be proud of) or with being proud of who you are. It’s when that nationalistic pride starts to equate to “I’m better than you because I’m American” (or English or whatever nationality you happen to be) that I have issues with it. State Of The Nation
I listened with interest last night to Obama’s state of the nation speech and potentially there were many positive ideas. Whether those ideas will actually bear fruit though remains to be seen. And what the cost will be to me personally of course. Despite the way the American economy has functioned in recent years money doesn’t grow on trees. All these ideas will need to be paid for. I see that Facebook has bowed to public pressure and recanted its recent change about who owns what and who can do what with it whenever they like. basically Facebook wanted to be able to use your stuff in any way they saw fit whenever they liked. Even if you subsequently deleted it. What a fine example of corporate greed. Not content with the millions they’re making in advertizing revenue they wanted to make money off your stuff too. Fortunately there was a backlash and they’re now returning to their previous TOS. Read the rest of this entry »
If you don’t like something…
If you don’t like something change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. ~ Mary Engelbreit.
I’ve always thought that this is one of the truest sentiments that anyone could take to heart.
Public Outrage Over Octuplets
It seems I am going to have to revisit one of my earlier posts about the recent birth of octuplets. As I said at the time very little had been released about the parents. For parents you can now read parent. Nadya Suleman is the now named mother and she is an unemployed graduate living with her parents. Personally I don’t have any issue with someone being a single parent and neither should anyone else. Having seen the abysmal job that many two parent families have done of raising their children I refuse to cast stones over that one. Read the rest of this entry »
Ever Been To A Penis Museum?
One of the really bizarre things I came across during my travels was a penis museum in Húsavík, Iceland. Now I don’t know if the museum is unique within the world but I’ve certainly not heard of any others. The museum was founded in 1974 (I believe) by Sigurður Hjartarson. His aim is to collect a specimen from every single mammalian species indigenous to Iceland. Read the rest of this entry »
There’s Always Bloody Something
I was asked recently about the tagline to Bouncing Hedgehog – “There’s Always bloody Something.”
“There’s Always Bloody Something” is a memory from my childhood. My father had been in the Royal Air Force or RAF as a navigator with IX Bomber Squadron. When he left the squadron he was given a pewter tankard which bore the official squadron crest which was a bat. Read the rest of this entry »
With One Of These…
There are many, many variations of this joke.
One day a little boy and a little girl are playing basketball and the boy is losing to the girl. Feeling a bit put out he digs into his pocket and pulls out three marbles and says “I’m better then you because I have three marbles.” Read the rest of this entry »
The Top Four Adult Jokes?
I was e-mailed these recently by a friend under the title “Top Four Adult Jokes.” I have no idea where they came from but I thought I’d share anyway. laughs are sorely needed in these “interesting times” in which we live. Personally I’m not sure they represent THE top four but they are quite funny. My personal favourite is the “Pickle Slicer” one. Out of these four I think it deserved to win.
